Academic Writing-History

My main interest lies in Global History and I particularly enjoy focusing on the interplay between material and intellectual culture.

This summer I won a research scholarship (i.e. 'Warwick URSS'), as part of which I compared European and Japanese cultures through a study of their mechanical automata.

I am also particularly interested in the process by which artifacts from an exotic culture become integrated in a host culture and have examined this process through a series of case studies, such as the 'Manila shawl' and the hand fans that have become part of the Spanish identity, despite their eastern origins.

Furthermore, I have concentrated on the study of the ‘chinoiserie’ and ‘japanning’ trends in Europe and specifically on their manifestation on palaces and mansions across the continent.
